Discipline on the mat.
Character for life.

For over a decade, Qawra Wrestling Club has welcomed children, youth, and adults from across Malta onto the mat — not only to learn wrestling, but to build confidence, friendship, and respect. Qawra Wrestling Club is a community-focused non-profit organization in Malta dedicated to promoting the sport of wrestling while encouraging healthy lifestyles, discipline, teamwork, and personal growth. The club provides a welcoming environment where children, teenagers, and adults can develop physical fitness, confidence, resilience, and respect through professional coaching and structured training programs. By organizing educational activities, competitions, workshops, and community outreach initiatives, Qawra Wrestling Club strives to make wrestling accessible to everyone regardless of age, gender, or background, helping build stronger individuals and a healthier, more connected community.

Welcome

A home for wrestlers, and a hub for our community

Qawra Wrestling Club is a registered Maltese non-profit voluntary organisation. We exist to make Olympic-style wrestling — and the values that go with it — accessible to everyone, regardless of age, gender, background, or experience. Our doors in Iż-Żurrieq are open to first-time visitors, curious parents, lifelong athletes, and every neighbour who wants to be part of what we do.

Our mission

To promote wrestling and active, healthy lifestyles in Malta — particularly among children, young people, women and underserved members of our community — by providing safe, structured, affordable training; by educating coaches, referees and volunteers; and by championing the values of respect, fair play, inclusion and lifelong learning.

Our vision

To be Malta's leading community wrestling organisation: a place where every child can find belonging, every adult can find purpose on the mat, and every volunteer can find meaningful service. We aim to develop a generation of athletes who are as proud of how they conduct themselves as of how they compete — and to make Iż-Żurrieq known across Europe as a small Maltese town that does wrestling, and community, exceptionally well.

Our history

The club was started in a borrowed school hall with two donated mats, one whistle, and seventeen children. For the first three years, every session was run entirely by volunteers, and most of the equipment was bought through coffee mornings and sponsored walks. In 2016 we registered formally as a voluntary organisation. In 2018 we moved into our current home in Iż-Żurrieq, thanks to support from the local council and a long-term partnership with the parish community. Since then we have hosted national tournaments, sent juniors to international invitational events, run twelve summer camps, and introduced more than 1,800 children to wrestling.

We exist because someone, many years ago, opened a door for the people who founded this club. We try to do the same — every week, for every person who steps onto our mat. Many of our current coaches and committee members started here as children. Some were our first ever members. That continuity is, quietly, the thing we are proudest of.
